Thumbing through copies of Conde Nast Traveller and National Geographic in the summer months is akin to going on a merry-go-round. It provokes anticipation, feels exhilarating and engenders giddiness-but at some point, one’s head starts to spin, feeling wrung out after coming down from that high. Don’t get me wrong, I love the possibility of jet-setting (maybe not cruising!) and leaving behind one’s 9-to-5, but I’m also aware of the ‘toils’ of travelling, ranging from waking up with a crick in the neck after sleeping in an airport to getting impossibly lost with no clue where you are staying after being turned out around by genuinely helpful yet sadly mistaken locals.

The pandemic, at the very least, has shown us that sticking closer to home does not, necessarily, have to be a drag. But I’d argue that one can scale down farther than a B&B weekend getaway. Summer isn’t (just!) about the destination location. It’s about the little moments too-like an ice cream that hits the right spot or a cool breeze enjoyed on a balcony. Put together, many of the things we initially consider insignificant form the tapestry of experiences that fuel our nostalgia in later years.
