There were so many points where I was reminded of my own days, studying in England-being surprised that a policeman really just wanted to wish me a good day and wasn't tailing me or being happy at finding pakoras at Morrisons. (Loved the paragraph on 'exotic' grocery store finds!)

It really did feel like a fresh breath of air, not having to face the stigma of racial prejudice back home in Austria. Of course, there were minor incidents, like you describe yourself, but I always felt privileged to have spent some of the best years of my life in that country.
