Yes, I never got asked 'where I'm really from' in the UK either. And I think you are right, it's an older generation thing when one does. Fellow Millennials and Gen Z obviously really don't care.
What I find interesting particularly here in Austria is the different degrees of racism. People who are Eastern European, whose parents emigrated years ago and built businesses and married into Austrian families are considered Austrians whereas people who are Asian or African are not given the same consideration. (And there are obviously individual differences between how a Filipino, an Indian or someone from,let's say, Nigeria, would be treated. )
