I think you are spot on with the comment on Ukrainian refugees. With Syrian refugees, though people were welcoming, there was always a bit of that lingering 'anti-Muslim' stance.
That bit about a white Catholic preferring a Black Catholic over a white Protestant in terms of their child's future marriage partner I can readily believe. I know people who would prefer their children to marry within their own ethnic group but given a choice between someone of that race who is an atheist and someone who is white but a fervent Catholic, they'd opt for the Catholic.
